Case; Total thoroughfare of the corrugated packagings at Nordfjord Kjøtt
It is not always people can do as they want. However, our sales manager Berge Eide got the confidence from his customer, Nordfjord Kjøtt. As one of Norway’s biggest meat supplier they handle a lot of packaging in an advanced logistic chain. By a total thoroughfare of the system, the economy as well as the handling were really optimized. The products reach the consumers through grocery shops.
“We very soon experienced that huge volumes of air were transported; the old packaging was only partly filled with products. We started with the sliced sandwich-meat and developed a new wrap-around, which very easily could be transformed into a dispay in the shop. This new solution means a utilization increase on pallets from 70% till 93%.” When the total thoroughfare of slaughter products was done, the volume was increased by 42% and the use of corrugated reduced by 28%.
Then the packagings for minced meat and ordinary meat were looked into. Smurfit Kappa Norpapp launched a new tray which optimized the former packaging solution. The saving of the volume is 33% and the reduction of corrugated is 35%. The volume itself is very important since the products must be stored in their own stock at the wholesale dealers and in the shops.
The Passion:
”Of course it is a real challenge to enter the production plant in this way, but through a cooperation between the customer and ourselves, we got the possibility to redraw and automate the entire packaging process. Nordfjord Kjøtt is also a good example of the importance of thinking right and to consider the complete packaging chain. We got the opportunity to influence on the designs and sizes of the vacuum packagings and trays, and could thus optimize the combination of consumer- and transport packagings.”
